Japanese Antique IKEBANA ceramic vase SUIBAN Blue & White arabesque design porcelain basin Tea ceremony 1920s W7.1in/W18cm.
This is a vase called a 水盤Suiban.
It is a type of vase used in Japanese flower arrangement, ikebana, and is shaped like a flat, shallow-bottomed board.
This item was made in the Meiji period (1868-1912) and is decorated with a pattern using a technique called 印判inban.
There are two types of porcelain: "染付Sometsuke" and "印判Inban. Inban was created as a new painting technique to streamline production in the Meiji era. Fine patterns are applied using a technique called transfer. However, since the transfer was done by hand at that time, the deviations and ambiguities create a unique atmosphere and are very popular.
The upper part of the pattern has a square spiral-like pattern called a 雷紋RAIMON thunder pattern. This represents thunder = lightning. In ancient times, rain was also a symbol of fertility. Therefore, it is meant to bring blessings to all things.
Other patterns include flowers and arabesques.
There is one chipped spot, but it is not a problem for use.
I have another water basin with a matching pattern in a different size on my list.
