A popular Chinese poetry called as "bamboo rock" by Zheng Xie (鄭燮, 1693-1766) renowned Chinese painter, calligrapher, and poet of the Qing dynasty has been widely loved by Japanese and a lot of painters have chosen it as motif of works. "平野五岳 Hirano Gokaku" (1811-1893) is one of them. He was a Buddhist monk of the Jodo Shinshu sect, and like Zheng Xie, he was a master of poetry, calligraphy, and painting, making him one of the most sought-after artists of his time.

"Bamboo Rock" is often interpreted as an allegory for human resilience. It encourages us to face difficulties with courage and determination, to find strength in adversity, and to remain steadfast in our beliefs even when confronted with opposition or hardship. The poem's enduring popularity lies in its powerful message of hope and perseverance.

Unlike the typical depiction of bamboo in Japanese paintings, which highlights peace and a dreamlike atmosphere, the bamboo in this hanging scroll is portrayed as rough and vigorous. It can be inferred that the artist sought to represent an unyielding spirit flourishing in a challenging environment
