This is a beautiful folding screen painted in the mid-Edo period. What makes it particularly rare is that the paintings on each side have completely different atmospheres.
The front is gorgeous and based on a passage from the Tale of Genji. The Tale of Genji, written by Murasaki Shikibu in the 11th century, is considered one of the world's first novels.
It is a masterpiece of classical Japanese literature that chronicles the life, romances, and political power struggles of the protagonist, Prince Genji, within the Heian-era imperial court.
In contrast, the back features delicate flowers painted on a silver background that has deepened in color with age.
Clouds are lavishly rendered on the front using gold leaf, and the white of Japanese natural mineral pigments is layered on top to create a subtle light.
A closer look offers a fascinating glimpse into the lives of Heian aristocrats. The attire of the princesses is meticulously rendered, making it beautiful from both a distance and up close.
Enjoy placing it on a chest or hanging it on the wall. You can change the front and back to suit your mood, so you can enjoy two different paintings in one.
The painting is a little peeling, but overall it is in very good condition and ready to be displayed.
The metal fittings used around the edges are also of very high quality and are engraved with intricate arabesque patterns.
This is a piece of furniture called a 屏風Byobu in Japan. It is a type of furniture used to partition and decorate a room. The structure consists of a wooden frame with several sheets of paper and other materials attached and folded together.
Believed to have been introduced from China, the folding screen has a long history and was already in existence as a tool to protect against the wind during the Han Dynasty (206 BC - 220 AD) in China. In Japan, by the Muromachi period (1336-1573 B.C.), many ink paintings and extremely colored screens were produced.
Just placing a folding screen can change the atmosphere of a space at once, and it is convenient because it can be folded for storage.
