Japanese antique EDO 1600s Sun and Moon buddha statue by ENKU imitation monk wood hand carving sculpture temple, H13.2×2.8in/H33.5×7cm.
These two Buddhist statues were made in the early Edo period.
This is a copy of a work by 円空 Enku (1632-1695), which was imitated at the end of the Edo period. Although these are imitations, they have a very beautiful and peaceful aura. Enku was both a Buddhist monk and a sculptor who carved Buddhist statues in the early Edo period. He traveled throughout his life and carved approximately 120,000 Buddhist statues.
He is said to have carved about 120,000 Buddhist statues while traveling throughout his life. These were kept by a collector in Gifu Prefecture. There are many fans of Enku-butsu, or Enku Buddha, in Japan.
Its motif is a bodhisattva who presides over the sun and the moon.
It is characterized by its simple, rough carving marks and gentle expression. Another feature and attraction of his works is the way he utilizes the shape of natural wood.
Looking at them, you can feel very peaceful.
He will surely watch over you peacefully.
