This is one of a collection of works by 喜多川歌麿Utamaro Kitagawa, one of Japan's leading 浮世絵ukiyo-e artists of the 1700s.
This is a reprint of a famous ukiyoe by Utamaro from the Edo period. This was made in the Meiji era. Utamaro was a famous printmaker along with Hokusai. His works are characterized by delicate and elegant lines, and the beauty of women's various gestures and facial expressions is gorgeously expressed.
One of the reasons for the popularity of this work is that it vividly depicts not only glamorous women such as prostitutes and 芸者geisha 花魁oiran (courtesans), but also common girls of the city.
This painting depicts a prostitute having her collar shaved by a young man. The work is a beautiful and colorful depiction of an everyday scene before the glamorous dress up.

It is in good condition, but there are stain ,scratches and dirt due to aging. There is a tear in the paper on the reverse side.
