Japanese antique 1930s painting hanging scroll of water color Noh mask red eye kimono dancing with silk KAKEJIKU wooden box H75.6in/H192cm.
能 Noh, one of Japan's representative classical performing arts, is a song-and-dance drama that combines song, dance, and instrumental music.
The main character wears such a mask and dances to express the story. In its unique serenity, it expresses various human emotions, grudges, and intensity.
This is one of the dreamy Noh plays called “八島 Yashima,” in which the spirit of Minamoto no Yoshitsune appears. When a traveling monk visits Yashima in Sanuki, a fisherman (the spirit of Yoshitsune) appears and recounts the battle of Dannoura. Finally, Yoshitsune appears in armor, shows his excitement to fight, and disappears.
The painting depicts a warlord who fell into the Shura-do after his death in the middle of the battle.
修羅道 Shura-do is the Buddhist cosmological view of the six ways of reincarnation, a world of constant battles and strife. It has been said that those who fought in battle during their lives fall after death and suffer the pain of constant warfare.
Upon closer inspection, the eyes are red and no longer in human form. This is a powerful painting.
It was painted by 貫山 Kanzan Sekiguchi (1889-1961), who was selected 13 times for an exhibition called the Imperial Art Exhibition and excelled at Noh paintings.
It is beautiful, with some staining and discoloration, but no major damage. The tip of the shaft is wood. The silk around it is woven into a beautiful floral pattern. Comes in a wooden box and would make a great gift.
This is called KAKEJIKU a hanging scroll, and is a calligraphy or oriental painting on silk or paper.
In Japan, masters store various types of hanging scrolls. And he hangs a drawing scroll which represents the season and calligraphy scrolls which implies his feelings or message to his guests.
Another good point is that it can be rolled up and stored compactly.
