In Japan, foxes are often seen enshrined in shrines.
In Japan, it has long been believed that foxes are messengers and protectors of the gods.
Numerous stories have been handed down about foxes transforming into human forms. The spiritual power of the fox is superior to that of other animals, and the fox itself has been an object of worship.
This is a rare type of pottery, called Imado-yaki, which was made in the Kanto region from the Edo period to around the Meiji period. Many were made around the end of the Edo period as offerings to shrines.
It is unglazed and has a rustic and unique aura with the added atmosphere of age. This is a pair of slightly different sizes.
