Japanese antique 1900s hand carved wood block for talisman of Shinto shrine for ”sericulture, silkworm farming" H14.8x4.7in/H37.7x12cm
This is wood block for "Ofuda", talisman for Shinto shrine, "豊栄神社 Toyosaka Jinja" in Yamaguchi prefecture. In Japan, there is a long-standing custom of displaying printed or written prayers to the gods on paper, called "Ofuda,” on shelves and other places.
It is still common to start their new year by visiting a sacred place to pray for happiness and well-being in the coming year. People took old "ofuda" away and return them to shrines, then buy new ones for a new year. People offer one or two, or even more, wishes at the shrine, and there's a specific "ofuda" for each type of wish. This is ofuda for farmers wishing "plentiful harvest in sericulture, silkworm farming" .
Hand-carved, they have a cool, aged look. When you hold it in your hand, you can see the black color with just a hint of black ink.
You can display it as it is or actually print it like a woodblock print.
