The names of many gods are engraved on these boards. These boards are woodblocks that were used at shrines to print these prayers onto paper.
As a result, the letters are upside down.
This set of four boards features the names of ancient Japanese gods, such as 天照大日Amaterasu Omikami and 諏訪大神 Suwa Okami.
In Japan, there is an ancient custom of printing or writing prayers to the gods on paper called "ofuda," and displaying them on shelves.
Because they are hand-carved, they retain a patina, and when you hold them in your hands, you can feel the beauty of the black, with the subtle bleed of black ink.
They look great displayed as they are, or printed like woodblock prints.
