Japanese antique 1900s green tea bowl CHAWAN "SHINO"ware glazed screen handmade Matcha Cup Tea Ceremony with box signature W4.5in/W11.5cm.

This is an old tea bowl made of 志野 Shino ware.
There is an abstract painting on the front. It is not clear whether it is a plant or a landscape, but it is also an interesting aspect of Shino teacups.
It is very interesting that the glaze is not constant but varied. The color of the clay darkens with age, and the contrast with the glaze makes it even more interesting.

Shino mainly uses feldspar, a finely crushed stone, for the glaze. Because of its high melting point, feldspar glaze requires high temperature and long firing time in a kiln. It is a highly viscous glaze, and the finished product is thick and milky white. It is interesting to note that the glaze shrinks during firing, giving the bowl a pockmarked yuzu skin like this bowl, and the color of the clay can be seen and hidden from the parts where the glaze is not applied enough.

Also, as the color of the clay becomes darker with age, the contrast with the glaze becomes even more apparent and interesting.
