Antique Japanese Wood Shishi Lion Sculptures pair, Temple Guardian Statues, 1900s

This is a pair of old wooden lion SHISHI獅子 sculptures. They are very large and impressive. Their unique and adorable expressions are also charming. They were originally enshrined in a temple as guardian deities on the altar.
These legendary creatures are called “shishi” and are considered the kings of all beasts and spiritual creatures that ward off evil. For this reason, they are enshrined in temples and shrines.
One lion has its mouth open, while the other has its mouth closed. This is also known as “阿吽A-un,” and it is said to symbolize the beginning and end of all things.  

These lions are very lively and dynamic, with astonishing power. Their fur and expressions are also richly detailed.  
Since they are carved from a single piece of wood, there are natural cracks on the back due to the wood's aging process. Some repairs have been made, but there is no damage that would affect their display.
