Japanese antique 1800s 文晁 ink painting scroll hermit Zen painting, ink and wash ,old hanging scroll Kakejiku Kanji signature H66.9in/H170cm.

This is a very old hanging scroll. Painter from the late Edo period
谷　文晁Tani Buncho's disciple. It is a wonderful work depicting a hermit holding a peach with a lively touch of the brush. He allowed many of his disciples to use his signature.
This painting is also of excellent quality and appears to be the work of Buncho himself.
However, the entire hanging scroll is considerably damaged by age. The surrounding cloth is peeling and broken.
Buncho's father was a Chinese poet, and his literary education was nurtured under his influence. He studied the Kano school, Yamato-e, Nanga, Northern Song painting, Korean painting, and even Western painting, and is said to be a painter with a very diverse and broad range of styles, including portraits, landscapes, flowers and birds, and Buddhist paintings.

In China, peaches were believed to have the power of longevity and to ward off evil spirits. Therefore, this motif is a very auspicious work.
