Japanese antique 1700s stone sculpture of 3 Jizo, Ksitigarbha-bodhisattva from buddhist garden furniture, religious statue H17.1in/H43.5cm.
The three statues of Buddha known as the three Jizo statues.
After Buddha Shakyamuni, the founder of Buddhism, passed away, people had to wait for 5.6 billion years for a new Buddha. Jizo is believed to cure people in the absence of Buddha. Buddhism defines six different realms or states of existence within the cycle of birth, death, and rebirth known as samsara. They are the "hungry demon realm," the "hell realm," the "animal realm," the "asura realm," the "human realm," and the "demon realm.
People change realms in reincarnation, but all six realms require Jizo Bodhisattvas. This is the origin of the Rokujizo, and people enshrine sculptures of the Rokujizo at junctions and milestones along pilgrimage routes, and at other places where people gather.
This old sculpture was originally enshrined in a temple garden.
The stone is sandstone, but it is hard enough to be carved for hundreds of years. The stone is gray and light brown in color, turning a beautiful dark gray when wet.
