Made from ceramic and fired in the Aka-Shino Shino-yaki tradition, this matcha tea bowl shows a warm red feldspar glaze and delicate kannyu crackle that capture wabi-sabi aesthetics and Japanese ceramic art heritage. This exquisite Aka-Shino (Red Shino) Matcha bowl is crafted by Keisuke (Kyosuke) Fujiwara, the second son of the legendary Living National Treasure Kei Fujiwara. While the original artist-signed box has been lost over time, it comes safely housed in a high-quality protective wooden box (Awase-bako).
At H9.3cm × W13cm with a 450g weight, the handcrafted tea ware balances tactile heft and a comfortable lip profile for whisking and sipping. The red tone develops through a careful reduction firing that encourages iron reactions and soft orange-tinges, while the included wooden box protects the piece and makes it suitable as a tea ceremony gift or display in vintage or modern tea settings and everyday rituals.
About the glaze and firing
The red hue of this chawan bowl is achieved by applying an iron-bearing slip and a feldspar-based glaze, then controlling the kiln atmosphere through reduction firing. That slower, carbon-rich process develops the characteristic orange-tinged red of Aka-Shino and produces the fine crackle (kannyu) that adds depth to the glaze. These qualities are typical of shino pottery and are appreciated within traditional matcha cup collecting and tea ceremony practice.
Handcrafted feel and use
As an authentic tea vessel, the ceramic tea bowl offers a solid, grounded feel in the hand—suitable for whisking matcha or as a display piece in wabi sabi decor. The bowl’s diameter and lip profile support comfortable sipping and effective whisking for a consistent froth. Given its handmade nature and artisan pottery character, variations in glaze tone and crackle are part of the piece’s charm.
Care and handling
These care steps help preserve the glaze and the subtle kannyu pattern.
