A temple bell carried by Shingon Buddhist monks. This is a ritual implement called a Goeika Bell.
It is used by being swung and rung during sutra recitations and chanting of hymns.
Its design resembles a Kongo bell, symbolizing the shattering of worldly desires and representing the wisdom of the Buddha.
The tassel is decorated with red cord and tassels.
It is characterized by a clear, resonant tone, said to ward off evil spirits and carry prayers to the Pure Land of Bliss.
It is very old and exquisitely crafted. Its tone is clear and beautiful.
Along the route lie 88 temples where Kobo Daishi, founder of Shingon Buddhism, is said to have practiced, along with numerous sacred sites.
The red tassel can be easily removed.
