This folding screen is a reproduction of a painting by Yamamoto Baiitsu (1783-1856), a Nanga painter from Nagoya during the Edo period. It was painted 1960s. Baiitsu was known as a master of flower-and-bird paintings. Although there is no signature on this piece, it was originally part of a pair, and one of the other pieces is signed “Baitsu.” However, this piece is not his work.
The overall design features gold accents layered with white and light green, creating a weathered appearance reminiscent of natural patina. The gold sections appear more vibrant when exposed to light, yet they emit a subtle glow, giving the piece an elegant ambiance.
The birds are depicted joyfully flying among the blooming flowers. The depiction of the birds is also well executed. The delicate rendering of the plants and trees reflects the characteristic style of Japanese painting.
There are three holes in the painting, but two of them have been repaired.
This is a piece of furniture called a “屏風 byobu” in Japan. It is a type of decorative furniture used to divide rooms, consisting of a wooden frame with multiple sheets of paper or other materials attached to it, which can be folded.
It is believed to have originated in China, and folding screens have a long history, having already existed in China during the Han Dynasty (206 BC-220 AD) as a windbreak. In Japan, during the Muromachi period (1336–1573), many folding screens featuring ink paintings and vibrant colors were produced.
