This old hanging scroll is made of paper and silk. A carp climbing a waterfall is depicted on the silk.
This work was created by a disciple of Kano Jukawa, a Japanese painter of the Kano school who was active during the Edo period (1700s). It was painted in the early 1800s.
He was skilled in the classical and orthodox style of the Kano school. He specialized in ink paintings, flower and bird paintings, and figure paintings, and his meticulous and elegant brushwork is a hallmark of his work.
