FINE! beautiful Japanese antique 1700s Bronze statue censer Koro heavenly maiden shishi lion with wooden box, Incense burner H4.3in/H5.5cm.
This incense burner was made in the early to mid Edo period.
It is a rare piece with a celestial maiden sitting on a lion. Since lions are also thought to protect gods, this is most likely 文殊菩薩Monju Bosatsu (Manjusri) rather than a nymph. Monju Bosatsu is said to govern wisdom and is also famous for his compassion. This one is sitting with one leg down in a relaxed manner, which is a calming sight to behold.
There is a hole in the back through which smoke is emitted.
In Japan, 獅子Shishi lions have been very important as spiritual beasts to ward off evil. Lions are also said to be the guardian deities of Buddha and are often seen in temples and shrines.
The combination of these two symbolizes that the lion is the king of the hundred beasts, meaning "there is nothing to fear," and that with Monju riding him, "with Monju's wisdom, there is nothing to fear".
The color of the copper has deepened with age. This is called "old copper" and is popular and expensive in Japan.
It is ready to use and comes in a wooden box, making it ideal as a gift.
