FINE! 1820s Japanese antique Bronze censer Koro shishi for repose of souls buddhist temple with box gecko lizard shogun Incense burner H6.3in/H16cm.

This is a very unusual copper incense burner from the late Edo period. What is unusual is that the motif is a gecko. At the top is a lion. In Japan, lions have been cherished as a symbol of various things. They are spiritual beasts that exorcise demons and evil spirits, symbols of power and authority, divine beasts that wish for a bountiful harvest, and motifs of the performing arts.
And as if to support it, there are lizards on both sides. In Japan, this is called a imori gecko. There is an old tale that the spirits of warriors who died in a battle became a dwarf demon called IMORI and settled down around a well. In keeping with this motif, a mark featuring a lizard figure is also in relief in the center.
It is assumed that this piece was made to repose the souls of samurai and shoguns. The atmosphere of aging is very cool.
If you look closely, you can see a detailed pattern expressed in relief, which is very cool. The set comes with a very old wooden base. On the back side, it is written the 3rd year of the Bunka era. This means 1820.
It comes with a wooden box and would make a great gift.
