1800s Japanese antique BIZEN SHIGARAKI old hand made ceramic jar flower vase with wooden lid ,tea ceremony Ikebana H10.8×6.5in/H27.5×16.5cm.
This intermediate size old pot was made in 信楽 Shigaraki ware in the late Edo period. It has a very old solid wooden lid. The purpose of use is unknown, but this item was used in daily life.
It is in very good condition and has no major damage. Shigaraki ware is known for its unique texture and rustic beauty. During firing, ashes from the firewood fall down and react with feldspar contained in the clay, sometimes creating a blue-green or yellow-green glassy stain (natural glaze). What is characteristic of this jar is commonly known as 胡麻 GOMA sesame, a bumpy pattern that looks like sesame paste or sesame seeds on the surface of the glaze as the ashes that fell during firing melted. The elegant sheen that comes out with age is also beautiful.
It is recommended to decorate it simply or with flowers.
