BIG! FINE! Japanese antique ceramic jar SHIGARAKI ware 1920s, Beautiful blue-green stripes like a waterfall, H17.3xW12.2/H44xW31cm.
This is a very rare large jar in Japan.
The Mingei (folk art) movement flourished in Japan around the 1920s. It was a movement that sought to find beauty in everyday utensils produced by hand.
This large jar is one of the examples of this movement, and its beauty has been recognized once again. The reason why it is unusual is that it is a Koishiwara-yaki pot, which is also called a sibling of Onta-yaki.
Koishiwara Pottery established the “beauty of use” while making its way as a daily commodity in Higashimine Village (former Koishiwara Village), Asakura County, Fukuoka Prefecture. Koishiwara Pottery has a beautiful style similar to that of Takatori Pottery, which conveys the style of the seven Enshu kilns, and the bold use of glazes similar to that of Onta Pottery.
The unique glossy glaze of iron glaze boldly divides the jar into three parts.
The glaze, which is unique to iron glaze, boldly divides the jar into three sections. The body is roughly half black, half brown, and the mouth is covered with a glaze with green and gray tints.
The design has a very modern feel. Another feature is the balance between the plump body and the narrowed mouth. This shape is also wonderful, with its spacious lines harmonizing within the large jar.
Such large vases are becoming less common today and are very valuable. When displayed in a cabinet or on a display shelf, you will feel the universal beauty that matches both the East and the West.
This special large jar is recommended for pottery lovers.
