Big Japanese old "SUISEKI" scholars stone, indoor viewing stone, Zen garden stone, with a hand carved pedestal W20.7in / 52.5cm

"水石Suiseki" is a Japanese culture or hobby of viewing stones indoors.
This culture came from China in the 12th century, and getting popular among noble and samurai society.
They preferred and collected stones which resembles mountain and made a small landscape scenery in a tray filled with water. It has something in common with "bonsai" and "suiseki" are also displayed in "床の間tokonoma", an alcove in a traditional Japanese room where art pieces are displayed.

This stone is an igneous rock formed by the rapid cooling of lava on the Earth's surface after a volcanic eruption such as Fujiyama and Asamayama. We can clearly see the difference between the large, well-formed crystals of quartz and feldspar, which grew slowly in the magma, and the fine-grained, glassy matrix that cooled too quickly to crystallize. Apart from scientific aspects, this suiseki has a distinctive presence, suggesting images of faraway mountain ranges, or perhaps a large, low-lying island on the horizon. Some might even see the silhouette of a giant salamander. Its wooden pedestal was carved to fix exactly the bottom of the stone and a signature of the craftsman "青市 Aoichi" is carved on the bottom.
