Carved from a single block of dense timber, this antique wooden mokugyo carries a commanding weight and a deeply resonant voice favored in temple rites. It is a very large, rare example with H 12.8in × W 11.8in × D 9.8in (about H33cm×W30cm×D25cm) and weighs 95oz (2.7kg), making it one of the more substantial japanese fish drum forms used by monks. The surface is finished in red lacquer with gold leaf, carved kanji, and shows age-appropriate scratches, peeling and small cracks near the holes; overall condition is very good and the piece is ready to use and includes large mallet.
Overview
This large meditation instrument is an authentic zen ritual tool historically used in temple ceremonies and daily chanting. The piece reads as a rare spiritual artifact because of its scale and the quality of the timber. The red and gold lacquer finish and visible kanji carving reflect traditional Japanese aesthetics consistent with a japanese wooden drum used in monastic settings.
Sound and Use
A single strike with the included mallet produces a deep resonant tone that carries across a quiet room; the sound is suited to mindfulness sound therapy, seated meditation, temple chanting, and ritual pacing. As a buddhist temple gong and japanese fish drum, it functions as both an audible cue for communal practice and a focal instrument for solo meditation.
Condition and Care
Condition is very good for an antique: there are small scratches, dirt from aging, and areas of peeling and hairline cracks around drilled holes, but these do not affect playability or tone. The mallet and cushion have been replaced previously and remain serviceable. To preserve finish and gold leaf, avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight and extreme humidity; lightly dust with a soft cloth and store on the included cushion when not in use.
Authenticity and Craftsmanship
Carved from one block of wood, the mokugyo’s form — sometimes modeled on a fish or pair of fish — symbolizes wakeful awareness in Buddhist practice. The hand-carved lacquer and gold leaf application, combined with kanji inscriptions, support its identification as an authentic temple-style instrument rather than a modern replica.
