Antique Shoudai-yaki Matcha Bowl: Japanese Tea Ceremony Pottery with Box

Shōdai-yaki is a traditional Japanese pottery from Kumamoto Prefecture. Its name originates from Mount Shōdai, located in the northern part of the prefecture. It boasts a history of approximately 400 years, believed to have started around the beginning of the Edo period (around 1600). 

 Shōdai ware is made using soil, which is rich in iron and contains many pebbles. This type of clay allows the pottery to be fired at a high temperature, similar to porcelain, resulting in a relatively hard and durable ceramic. A distinctive feature of Shōdai ware is its straw ash glaze, prepared in a traditional manner. This glaze is often applied dynamically by pouring or double-coating, creating a deep and simple beauty in the finished pieces. 

This tea bowl was black glazed containing iron at first, then poured with another glaze to put on colors in yellow and green. Normally, where the glaze would just be poured and left to finish, the glazed surface is brushed with something like a brush, creating a unique, abstract expression. Also unique is the fact that there's an unglazed area inside the tea bowl where the clay is exposed, and the glaze is unevenly pooled at the bottom, tilted to one side.
