Antique Kōbō Daishi Statue: Japanese Buddhist Monk Sculpture, Wood & Lacquer

This is a statue of Kōbō Daishi made of wood and lacquer. He is also famously known by the name 空海 Kūkai. Kōbō Daishi was a Buddhist monk from the early Heian period.
He traveled to Tang China to study esoteric Buddhism and, upon returning to Japan, founded the 真言宗 Shingon sect. He devoted himself to spreading Buddhism throughout Japan and left behind numerous achievements.
Seated on a chair, holding a five-pronged vajra in his right hand and a rosary in his left, he is often referred to as “Shinnyo-sama” This is considered one of his most representative forms.
The back bears inscriptions including the reign year, but they are difficult to read clearly due to the piece's age.
Though small, it possesses a commanding presence.

It is in good condition, but there are Scratches and peels and dirt due to aging.
