These are called stacked boxes and have long been used in Japan as containers for food.
It is said that the 重箱jubako first appeared in the Muromachi period (1333-1573), but it was not until the Edo period (1603-1868) that it became commonplace. In particular, samurai families and feudal lords used to carry dishes in maki-e lacquer-work stacked boxes when they went "hunting" or "cherry blossom viewing. Therefore, the quality of maki-e on these old stacked boxes is very high, and you will be surprised at the delicacy of the maki-e when you see them up close.

The motif of this box is cranes flying above the waves. The depiction of the vitality of the rough waves crashing against the rocks is stunning. The delicate lines also convey a sense of speed, and even the spray of water can be seen on closer inspection. Shells have been embedded in part of the rocks to create a three-dimensional effect. Looking closely at the cranes, the feathers are also incredibly detailed. The entire side and lid are painted, creating a luxurious feel. This box has some minor peeling, but overall it is in very good condition and is ready to use.

The interior is red, creating a beautiful contrast with the black, creating a very Japanese look.
There are some repaired marks and also some tiny peelings and chipping as shown in pictures. Yet there is no major damage and it can be used immediately.
