It is an item painted on unglazed pottery that has been made since the Edo period (1603-1868) as a local toy, a charm against evil, or a good omen. Local toys in Japan are also traditional crafts of the region. Many of them use local products and are modeled after objects associated with religious beliefs or local animals.
The motif is head of a Kannon Buddha statue.
The atmosphere of the Kannon with its eyes closed and the unique paintwork are impressive.
