Works by a potter from 備前 Bizen. Because they are all handmade, each piece is unique in shape and color.
The shape of this item is very interesting, like a scallop shell.
Although it is a small dish, small plates like this are also used in Japan as a substitute for chopstick rests.
Bizen ware is characterized by its brownish-brown surface, which is created by firing a mixture of soil from the bottom of rice paddies, iron-rich mountain soil, and black clay, and by the various patterns created by the nature of the soil, the way it is arranged in the kiln, changes in kiln temperature, and the way the ash and charcoal are applied. It is also called "the art of clay and fire.
The beautiful brownish and reddish gradation of the clay is the product of chance, and no two pieces are alike.
In Japan, it is popular as a dish to complement fish and sushi.
