RARE!!Japanese antique ceramic doll お多福OTAFUKU OKAME ornament happy symbols smile woman with folding fan Edo 1800s H5.1×5.3in/ H13×13.5cm.
This is a doll made of pottery in the late Edo period.
This mask with a woman's smile is called “Otafuku” or “Okame” and has been loved in Japan since ancient times.
A plump woman is also a symbol of prosperity and is thought to bring good fortune.
Some of the glaze and other parts have peeled off with age, but it has an aura of its own and is very good.
The expression on her face is wonderful, and the way she smiles while holding a fan in her hand and hiding her face a little is adorable. The overall balance of the masks is also excellent, and the way they are slightly weighted to one side gives a sense of dynamism.
The signature in Kanji characters is engraved on the back.
