Japanese pottery bell white horse animal doll with 白馬 Hakuba poem Paper weight, Ornaments Japanese vintage small bell H2.9in/7.3cm.
This is a pottery bell. It is also cute and unique and recommended as a Christmas ornament or New Year figurine.
In Japan, they are called earthen bells and have been loved for a long time.
It is an item painted on unglazed pottery that has been made since the Edo period (1603-1868) as a local toy, a charm against evil, or a good omen. Local toys in Japan are also traditional crafts of the region. Many of them use local products and are modeled after objects associated with religious beliefs or local animals.
This is a clay bell made in 白馬 Hakuba, Nagano, an area famous for its large skiing and other snowy mountains. The motif is a white horse, and on the side of the body is written the Kanji character for white horse and a poem. The poem reads, "The spear is the starry sky, the ladle is the moonlit night, and the white horse I miss is the snow light.
