"Suiseki" is a Japanese culture or hobby of viewing stones indoors.
This culture came from China in the 12th century, and getting popular among noble and samurai society.
They preferred and collected stones which resembles mountain and made a small landscape scenery in a tray filled with water. It has something in common with "bonsai" and "suiseki" are also displayed in "tokonoma", an alcove in a traditional Japanese room where art pieces are displayed.
This piece possesses a truly captivating organic form. Its shape fluidly changes depending on the viewer: to one person, it might appear as a swirling cloud formation; to another, it resembles a creature drifting in the deep sea.
By deliberately eschewing straight lines, the object achieves a surprisingly soft and yielding impression despite its stony composition. A particular highlight is the subtle depression referred to as the "Mizutamari" (water puddle).
Conventionally, the base of a Suiseki is often preferred to be flat to settle snugly on its stand. However, the underside of this piece features two distinct protuberances (knobs), making it appear unstable without a dedicated supporting base.
Ultimately, this stone embodies the philosophical spirit of Zen, echoing Heraclitus’s famous phrase, "panta rhei" (everything flows). It is a silent representation of the ceaseless transformation of all things in the universe.
The pedestal with beautiful chisel marks was carved to fit the bottom and the back of the stone.
