This is a stone doll ornament, It can also be used as a large paperweight.
It's made of Japanese black stone called 那智黒Nachi Kuro.
The motif 達磨"Daruma" is a Buddhist monk who introduced Buddhism from India to China.
It was made by imitating the appearance of "Daruma " "座禅zazen".
"zazen" is to correct the posture by cross-legging and unite the spirit at the border of relentless dreaming.
This stone is a type of slate produced in the town of Kamikawa, Kumano City, Mie Prefecture. It has been used as an inkstone since around the Heian period (794-1185), and in the Edo period (1603-1868) it was used in gardens, and from around the Meiji period (1868-1912) it was often used as a go stone. It is popular for its smooth and beautiful black color.
