Japanese antique Noh mask red demon 武悪BUAKU wood carving Kyogen buddhist ornament statue with silk bag Japanese art wall deco H7.9in×W6.7in.

These masks are called 武悪BUAKU evil.
It is used in the roles of demons, gatekeepers of hell, and Enma. The upper teeth are set in a single line, the eyelids are swollen and the eyes are large and downcast, giving the impression of being comical and feeble.

This mask is said to be the "阿吽A-Un" version of the mask called "Beshimi" of the Noh masks.
In Sanskrit, "A-Un" is the first sound made when the mouth is open, and "Un" is the last sound made when the mouth is closed, and they represent the beginning and the end of the universe and all things, respectively.
In Japan, "A-Un" is also used in religious statues, which are sometimes made as a pair of open-mouthed "阿形A-shape" and closed-mouthed "吽形Un-shape" figures.

These masks are used in a theatrical performance called 狂言Kyogen.
Kyogen is a spoken dialogue-based drama. It does not use any large-scale stage equipment, but expresses everything through words and gestures. The main characteristic of Kyogen is laughter. Kyogen takes as its subject matter the daily lives of the common people of the Middle Ages and the stories they tell, and by cutting through human habit and nature, it makes them laugh and be amusing. For this reason, there are many masks with unique expressions.

It is said that there are about 60 types of Noh masks, and it is said that over the years, they have been derived from them and have expanded to about 250 types as slightly different surfaces.
The "face" of Noh mask is called "Omote", and it is mainly carved with cypress and colored with pigment (Ganryo).
It is carved to represent a momentary facial expression, an intermediate facial expression, or an infinite facial expression, and on one side, it is possible to show a wide variety of facial expressions from the light and shadow and the viewing angle, creating a Noh production.
"Small" is the face of the youngest woman in the sense that it is cute, pretty, young and beautiful.

It is in very good condition. There are repairs around the cheeks and mouth, but I hardly notice.

I list antiques that sometimes have chips, rubbings and cracks
as they are very old antiques so please check the images and understand the current
condition before buying.
