Japanese old wooden signboard for "mirin" Japanese sweet rice wine , with trademark and logo carved, H29.7xW7.1xD0.7in, weathered wood

This is a signboard for "mirin" , a type of sweet Japanese rice wine used as a cooking condiment which is a key ingredient in many Japanese dishes. 

This wood signboard was hanged on the wall of a grocery shop in Shiga prefecture between around 1890 - 1920. It says "醇良味醂酒”, premium sweet rice wine, at the center with a trademark of manufacturer on the top. Shop name and its owner's name are on the sides.

Hand-carved signs were once mainstream, but with the end of the Edo period, they were replaced by signs where characters were painted onto thin iron sheets. This sign is a legacy from the final era of hand-carved signs. The appeal lies in the unique texture created by the passage of time, such as the numerous scratches and chipped paint.
