Above all, the rich texture on the surface of this pot is truly remarkable. The lacquer applied to the surface combines with the original surface to create a beautiful three-dimensional effect and subtle color variations. The handle also has a delicate and unique feel reminiscent of a plant's fruit.
The name “棗 Natysme(jujube) kettle” comes from the fact that it resembles the shape of the fruit of the jujube tree. In the world of tea ceremony, a wooden container coated with lacquer used to hold matcha is also called a Natusme, and it has the same origin.
The jujube fruit is said to have been introduced to Japan from China around the Heian period. The use of the term “Jujube” in tea ceremony is said to have originated during the Muromachi period.
This tea kettle is more suitable for a 風炉 furo (charcoal brazier) than a 炉 ro (sunken hearth), and its slightly smaller size makes it easy to use.
This tea kettle has a slightly elongated shape, with beautiful curves at the upper part called the “shoulder” and near the bottom, giving it an elegant and refined appearance.

The wonderful thing about this kettle is that the surface of the kettle is coated with lacquer, which prevents water stains and other marks from forming on the surface and keeps the kettle beautiful for a long time. Only the finest kettles have this surface treatment. The excellence and ease of use of this kettle can be felt as soon as it is used, creating a rich texture with an uneven appearance that is both tasteful and beautiful. The handle of the lid is also unique, with holes designed to resemble insect bites. This is an expression of the natural wabi-sabi aesthetic in the handle.

This tea kettle was created by 政光 Kikuchi Masamitsu(1938-), 釜師 kamashi (a tea kettle master). He studied under Takahashi Keiten, a National Living Treasure tea kettle craftsman, and has won numerous awards at events such as the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition. In 1982, he was certified as a Japan Traditional Craftsman and has continued to actively create tea kettles to this day.
This tea kettle embodies his worldview of simplicity and soft texture, and is in excellent condition, making it a truly remarkable piece.
