FINE!Japanese Antique sculpture From Buddhist temple statue of 釈迦如来Shakyamuni shrine 1800 Edo era wood hand craft Buddhist alterH11.8×10.8in.

This is a Buddha statue in the style of the釈迦三尊 Shakyamuni sanzon, created in the mid-Edo period. 釈迦如来Shakyamuni Buddha is placed in the center, and various bodhisattvas are placed on either side of him. In this work, 文殊菩薩Monju Bosatsu riding on a statue is placed on the left, and 普賢菩薩Fugen Bosatsu riding on a lion is placed on the right. There are various patterns in this arrangement.
The whole piece seems to represent the Buddhist paradise, and is a precious work of art that is both peaceful and beautiful to look at.
First of all, the central figure of 釈迦如来Shakyamuni Buddha is wonderful with its precise carving of the pedestal and its gentle expression of kindness. The metal ornaments on the back of each Buddha statue, called haloes, are very delicate and amazingly skillful. It is impressive to think that they are all made by hand. The halo on the left side is broken off at the top.

The two bodhisattva images on either side are even older. These are the Buddha images that the founder of the temple, a monk, carried around in his pocket. The atmosphere of age is very cool. The pedestal to enshrine them was made around the middle of the Edo period. Therefore, the style is different.

The upper part of the inside of the kitchen is decorated with pillars and decorations, just like in Japanese temple architecture. If you look closely, you can see statue-like creatures created on both ends.

This is an imaginary animal called the 獏baku, one of the Chinese sacred animals. It has an elephant nose, rhinoceros eyes, a cow tail, and tiger feet, and is said to resemble a bear in body shape. The baku has long been used as a decorative sculpture in the construction of shrines because it is said to eat people's nightmares, to ward off plague if one sleeps on its skin, and to ward off evil spirits if its shape is drawn. It is also said that the baku eats iron and is a symbol of peace. The baku cannot survive in a turbulent world. In other words, when war breaks out, iron is turned into weapons and there is no iron for the baku to eat. This is why the baku became a symbol of peace.

All Buddha images cannot be removed from the kitchen. The very small incense burner in the center is made of copper and can be removed. The metal fittings on the outside of the kitchen are wobbly.
