This Shoudai-yaki matcha bowl is a traditional Japanese tea bowl designed for the tea ceremony, offering an authentic experience with every use. Handmade in Kumamoto Prefecture, this antique Japanese chawan combines artistry and function to enhance your tea ritual. Measuring 3.0 inches high and 4.5 inches wide (7.5 cm × 11.5 cm), it weighs 12.4 ounces (353 grams), making it comfortable to hold and ideal for daily use or display.

Crafted from iron-rich soil containing natural pebbles, this Kumamoto pottery bowl is fired at high temperatures, resulting in a durable ceramic that resists chipping and cracking. The bowl features a unique straw ash glaze bowl finish, applied using traditional techniques that create a dynamic, abstract design teacup surface with layered yellow and green hues over a black glazed matcha cup base. Inside, the unglazed area exposes raw clay, while the glaze pools unevenly at the bottom, adding character and authenticity to this handmade matcha cup.

This tea ceremony pottery piece comes with a wooden box and cloth bag for safe storage and gifting, though the cloth under the teacup is not included. It has been carefully inspected and is in very good condition, ready for immediate use or as a collector’s item.
