This work is called 志野Shino tea bowl and is said to be the most Japanese-style pottery.

It has a characteristic white glaze and fine cracks. While Shino ware decorations are often abstract and difficult to decipher at first glance, this tea bowl features a crane effortlessly gliding through the sky. It also bears the kanji characters “㐂寿” (Kiju), a phrase celebrating one’s 70th birthday, suggesting the artisan may have created this piece to commemorate someone’s 70th milestone.


Wheel-thrown yet intentionally asymmetrical rather than a perfect circle, the bowl carries a comforting warmth through the visible ridges left by the potter’s fingers. The boundary where the glaze meets the exposed clay near the base—known in tea terminology as yugiwa (glaze edge)—is one of the key highlights of a tea bowl. Here, the line is neither strictly straight nor a simple curve, but flows in a uniquely intriguing rhythm. The soft, slightly brownish-white glaze will surely contrast beautifully with the vibrant green of matcha.


It comes in a wooden box, so it is recommended as a gift.
