This set of wooden plates has been finished by artisans in Gifu Prefecture using a technique known as Shunkei lacquering. It includes one large plate, five smaller plates, and one pair of wooden chopsticks.
What's adorable about it is the design. Upon closer inspection, you'll see that the entire plate is actually a crane design.
Japanese lacquer includes colors such as black, red, and green, but Shunkei lacquer is particularly transparent, allowing not only the color but also the wood grain and texture to be clearly seen, creating a softer feel. These plates were originally designed for tea ceremonies, where various dishes are served individually on small plates and bowls. Their size and depth make them ideal for tea ceremonies accompanied by light snacks and sweets.
