This pottery is called 伊万里 old-Imari ware, and from the condition and coloring of the back, it is thought to have been made in the mid-Edo period. The fluffy thickness of the glaze and the lightness of the colors characteristic of this period are also beautiful. These items do not resemble newer items. You can see fine crack-like lines in the glaze, which are called “貫入 kannyu” and are considered one of the beauties of antique pottery in Japan.
The beauty of this item, which has a depth and elegance not found in mass-produced items, is something you will never get tired of.
This slightly deep dish is used in Japan for a variety of Japanese dishes. In modern times, they are also easy to use for salads and other dishes.
This time, too, the pattern is called “蛸唐草 octopus arabesque,” and it is clearly painted on the inside, showing the high level of technique.
