This double horned sake barrel is called as "Tsunodaru" and this is used for celebrating big events such as wedding, moving, building a house, opening shop. People gifted hold party and serve sake with this barrel.
A history of Tsunodaru began in the 14th century. A pair of men carried them with a pole on their shoulders, and hang barrels on the pole. Barrels were made of willow tree which is enough soft to be carved and absorb liquid preventing leaks. As technique was developed, cedar took place of willow and the shape changed more simply. Yet people regarded the original shape as auspicious one because a horn is a sort of object of worship and began to make it decorative and showy.
This barrel was made in 1960s for a local festival. The calligraphy shows the name of the town, shop and its crest. The body, even the bamboo twisted belt is lacquered in red and black. This can be disassembled into five parts, body, inner metal bottle, lid, side bar and tap.
condition... It is in good condition, but there are small scratches and dirt due to aging.
