RARE!Japanese antique furniture lacquer MAKIE bookrest, music stand, lectern, wood/shell/gold, with bamboo sparrows SAMURAI, drawer H18.9in.
This is called a 見台kendai, a stand used for reading or looking at books. This is very gorgeous and beautiful Japanese antique item.
It is also used in traditional Japanese performing arts, such as Noh, shakuhachi, and koto, for viewing scripts and music scores.
It has a beautiful gold bamboo and sparrow design on the front. This technique called 蒔絵MAKIE, This is a technique in which gold powder is glued to lacquer to create a picture.
Some of them are covered with shells using a technique called 螺鈿laden, which gives them a beautiful rainbow color when the light hits them. This was made in the Meiji era, when the city was clearly changed from Edo to Tokyo.
Because it is old, some of the shells have peeled off and some of the lacquer has come off to reveal the wood. There is no major damage and it is ready for use. It is assembled and has a drawer underneath. It also comes with tassels and stones for decoration.
The 竹TAKE(bamboo) and the 雀(SUZUME)sparrow in this design are a motif used in Japan as a metaphor for a good combination.
The sparrow is also a symbol of "prosperity of descendants" and "good harvest".
The family crest in the center is a motif of the leaves of the 柏KASHIWA(Oak) tree, which has been closely related to Shinto rituals since ancient times.
The leaves of the oak tree are large and have been used for cooking in earthenware since ancient times. Later, the leaves of the plant were also used as vessels for offerings to objects of worship, and the oak became one of the motifs of Shintoism.
Unlike most deciduous trees, the leaves of the oak tree overwinter without falling off, and remain on the branch until they are replaced by new buds the following spring.
