Old Japanese farmers' wood square bucket, "masu" with a handle, MINGEI, traditional farm appliance, Japanese antique, H9.8 x W13.8in
”Masu" was a tool used to measure "nengu"(tax) since the Middle Ages when taxes were paid in rice. Volumes were strictly ruled with old Japanese systems of weights and measures. This contains 1"to" approx 18 litters. It was said that a person consumes 10"to" approx 180 litters of rice a year. Edges are reinforced by iron bars and a handles is also mounted.d. Brands on sides are "一斗", 1"to" and "伊藤家”, means "Ito family", name of family to which this masu belonged.
