This extraordinary sculpture is a Yokogi (横木)—the vital wooden crossbar component of a Jizaikagi (自在鈎), an ingenious adjustable pothook system suspended from the ceilings of traditional Japanese farmhouses (Minka) directly over the Irori (囲炉裏), the open sunken hearth.

The Symbolism of Water & Fire: In Japan, the fish (often depicted as a majestic carp or sea bream) was not chosen for the hearth by accident. Because fish live in water, they were deeply revered as spiritual talismans to ward off destructive house fires.
