The beckoning cat is a uniquely Japanese lucky charm, beckoning good fortune with its adorable pose. Believed to have originated in the Edo town culture of the Edo period (1603-1868), it has now spread throughout Japan. Not only do the blessings differ depending on the color and direction of the raised paw, but the cat's facial expression also varies depending on the place of origin and era, making it popular among collectors today.
This white cat is said to bring good fortune. Made between the Meiji and Taisho periods, it has aged beautifully. As it is an older model, it does not hold any gold coins. Its whiskers have thinned over time, giving it an adorable impression.
This beckoning cat also has its left paw raised, which signifies welcoming people.
Beckoning cats with their left paw raised are said to be female cats, and are said to bring good fortune related to people, such as prosperous business and good relationships.
They are often chosen for places that wish to invite customers, such as shops and companies, or for people wishing to find love or marriage. Interestingly, the fewer koban coins a cat has, the older the cat is likely to be. The fewer koban coins a cat has, the older the cat is. Note that maneki-neko from the Edo period do not carry koban coins.
It is recommended to place one in your shop to pray for prosperous business.
