KOKESHI Japanese vintage pair of Tuchiyu kokeshi doll with flower signature, Traditional Kokeshi/Dento Kokeshi/wooden small doll H4.2×1.3in.
This is a Kokeshi doll called the Tuchiyu type. This kokeshi doll is characterized by its slightly entwined body and beret-like pattern on the top of the head.
高橋通Toru Takahashi (1953-) was born in Fukushima Prefecture and is still making kokeshi dolls. I have been making kokeshi dolls for generations since my grandfather. He was affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake and could not make kokeshi dolls for a while, but now he is back to making them in Fukushima.
I never get tired of looking at its simple, beautiful shape and delicate painting. A flower-like pattern is painted on the body.
Kokeshi dolls are wheel-thrown wooden doll toys that have been sold as souvenirs to bathers in hot spring resorts in the Tohoku region since the late Edo period.
Kokeshi dolls have a long history of fans in Japan, and now have a growing number of fans around the world.
In the old days, red items were said to protect against epidemics in Japan, and were not only used as toys but also as good luck charms.
In the old days, only privileged people were allowed to cut down trees on the mountain. Because of the sacred status of the trees, kokeshi dolls were also meant to be good luck charms connected to the mountain gods, which combined the images of physical and mental recovery and a good harvest.
Therefore, kokeshi dolls are not only cute, but also have a strong life force!
