This is an very old hanging scroll which depicts "普賢菩薩" Fugen Bosatsu with a wonderfully peaceful and tranquil atmosphere.　The name of "Fugen", as known as "Bodhisattva Samantabhadra" in Sanskrit is translated to "Universal Worthy," "All-Pervading Goodness," or "One Who Is All-Pervadingly Good." Fugen Bosatsu symbolizes the diligent practice of Buddhist tenets, vows, and precepts. He represents the action and manifestation of the Buddha's teachings. He is likely to be depicted with an white elephant and it symbolizes the power of wisdom, unwavering resolve, and the ability to overcome all obstacles and attachments. Given that Fugen Bosatsu is typically depicted without holding anything, the scene on the elephant's back, where he appears to be reading a scroll, suggests it was likely created during a peaceful era free of conflict. Both the Bodhisattva and the statue itself seem to be wearing faint smiles.
