This is one of the tools of the tea ceremony and is called a 水指mizusashi. It is a vessel used to add water to the tea kettle and to store water for washing tea bowls and tea whisks.
Like tea bowls, there are various types of mizusashi, and you can enjoy changing the item you use from time to time depending on the tea bowl, the season, and your taste.
This is a type called sometsuke porcelain, featuring hand-painted bamboo around the rim. It bears an inscription on the back and is in good condition.
The lid is beautifully crafted from light wood and lacquer.
