Japanese Urushi Lacquer Tray – Black Gold Family Crest Obon, Wooden Tableware

Crafted in Wajima with a durable nuno-bari base, this antique Japanese lacquer tray recalls the calm ritual of a traditional tea ceremony while carrying the martial elegance of samurai family crest imagery. The black lacquer field, hand-applied over wood and polished to a soft sheen, frames a gold-painted Maru ni Sumitate Yotsume kamon at the center and gold lettering beneath that records the original owner's name. Measuring 45.5 cm × 33 cm with a shallow 5.5 cm depth, the tray balances practical serving dimensions with museum-quality technique, and its lightly worn surface confirms careful past use rather than damage, intact.

Description

This Wajima lacquerware tray is a large, handcrafted wood obon whose black lacquer surface and gold motif evoke classical Heian aesthetics and later samurai-era symbolism. The Maru ni Sumitate Yotsume crest—four tilted squares within a circle—carries a storied lineage associated with kanoko-shibori textile patterns and historical figures such as Sassa Narimasa. The tray's scale and shallow rim make it suitable for serving tea, arranging seasonal sweets, or presenting a focused tabletop vignette of black gold table decor.

Technique and condition

The underside mark identifies the nuno-bari hon-kataji method, a premium Wajima lacquerware construction that layers fabric and lacquer to create a resilient, long-lasting base. The surface shows only minor scratches and no structural cracks; the gold-painted kamon and underside inscription are intact. Because the tray is an Urushi art piece finished with gold pigment, its finish reflects light softly rather than appearing metallic like gold leaf tableware.

Uses and styling suggestions

Use the tray for a traditional tea ceremony setting, as a vintage serving platter for small bites, or as an ornate banquet server for individual courses. It complements Heian style decor, minimalist interiors, and displays of premium Asian craft. As a decorative element, pair with monochrome ceramics or subtle textile runners to highlight the black and gold contrast.

Care and handling

Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight and extreme heat. Clean with a soft, dry cloth or a slightly damp cloth followed by immediate drying; do not use abrasive cleaners or soak in water. Handle the tray by its underside rim to preserve the gold-painted surface.
