Japanese Pottery Bell Ornament, SHISHI Lion, Vintage Paperweight

A small Japanese ceramic "Shishi" (lion-dog) bell (suitable as a figurine, paperweight, Christmas ornament, or vintage collectible).

This is an unglazed ceramic bell. With its charming and unique appearance, it makes a wonderful Christmas ornament or a lucky charm for the New Year.

Known in Japan as *dorei* (clay bells), these items have long been cherished.

They are made of unglazed pottery that has been hand-painted; this is a traditional craft that has existed since the Edo period (1603–1868), serving as folk toys, protective talismans, and lucky charms. Japanese folk toys are often local traditional crafts, frequently utilizing regional materials and featuring motifs inspired by local beliefs or indigenous animals.

The motif of this piece is the "Shishi" (lion-dog). At many Japanese shrines, one sees a pair of "Komainu" (lion-dog) statues. These are typically placed beside the *torii* gate—the entrance to the sacred grounds—or in front of the main shrine building. The Komainu is an imaginary beast of Japanese folklore with origins in India, revered as a guardian spirit that protects the sacred precincts.
